“There is an extraordinary story living within each of us.”

“If we seek to truly see each other and grow our connections from a place of sincerity, empathy, and acknowledgment of others; what we create, and the impact we leave, will have long lasting reach and effect.”

The roots of Sidewalk Ghosts were planted in September 2011, when I began blogging a series of daily essays, street portraits and videos based on interviews of absolute strangers. Journals that captured the hope, hurt and wisdom shared by 100s of diverse individuals as I asked all the same basic set of questions. And although the responses were varied, one profound call-to-action emerged: Empathy toward fellow human…

A much-shared outlook brought to the surface as 1000s from around the globe saw the faces of, listened to, and commented on the stories of absolute strangers. People I did not know who proved there are many who genuinely desire to better know their neighbor. A majority brave enough to appreciate diversity of perspective and lifestyle, and a community looking beyond race, creed, outlook, gender, age, attraction, religion, or whether in agreement or disagreement.

Evidence, that as unique individuals, and via the localized attitudes and efforts of many diverse people, we have the potential to forward a most positive and global effect.

Bettering the world we share…one interaction at a time.

Speaking and Appearances

In his signature light and often humorous storytelling style, Richard’s presentations raise eyes and actions away from bias, misconception and fear; and toward positive outlooks regarding our diversity, views of one another, our feelings about ourselves, and how much our individual effect matters to the world around us.

“The challenge is not necessarily an easy one. Something I’ve witnessed and shared first hand through over 35 years of professional practice, study, and a decade of photographing, filming, interviewing and associating with diverse strangers. I’ve been hugged, trusted, and listened to by thousands. I’ve also been screamed at, mocked, spit upon, and physically pushed aside. Yet, in all, a remarkable result has grown– proof showcasing the fact that even the slightest thought, word or deed can bridge far beyond bias, misconception, failure and fear. An actionable life, play and work enhancing outlook taught me by countless examples of unique people I’ve associated with and interviewed, and with that, a message and skill set I am dedicated to share with all I can.”—RR

Portraiture, Ethnographic, and Fine Art

My story as a photographer and artist began in the early 80s, when I opened my first studio in Las Vegas, Nevada—a mod little space constructed from the remains of a 3000-square foot citrus warehouse. I was in my mid-twenties, young, evolving, and thirsty to make my mark. Bright and dark memories that, to this day, are subtext to the perspectives grounding the regard I place on the worth of others, humanity and artistic integrity.

In my thirties, I faced a creative, spiritual, and emotional “Do-or-Die,” and driven by a hunger for personal growth and culture, I shut down my Las Vegas shop to travel the cities of Europe—lived a vagabond life as I exchanged security and predictability to experience risk, history, culture, and people. A character and spirit-forming trek that, in the end, left me homeless and stripped to the most simple lifestyle and reflections of myself. Yet, under it all, a great blessing was gifted to me—the birth of my cultural outlook, spiritual self, and storytelling curiosity.

Ultimately, I settled in Los Angeles—the home of my current chapter (with its full list of ups and downs), and base camp for my endless desire to share whatever I can to build trusting relationships and make photographs that value those I collaborate with.

Filmworks

I made my first film in 1988 when I was contracted by a little Las Vegas ad agency to produce and direct a campaign for a now closed down shopping mall. A comedic TV campaign in which characters satired the premise of subliminal suggestion. It was the first of four 30-second broadcast spots – The tools at my hand: An un-storyboarded script, 16mm film magazines, analog recording, and non-linear post-production, Boy have times changed.

Now a few decades later, a lot of trial and error, a moviemaker’s ambition, and a storyteller’s mind, I’ve found my place as a filmmaker. A firm believer of less-is-more, I stand true to a plain and modest purpose: To craft thoughtful works that stimulate deep consideration of what might be in the heart and mind of others and ourselves.
